A new edition (September 2011) of our first and popular publication…
The first full publication of the Society, in 1977, was The Origin of Heanor and District Street Names. The book was revised in 1992 for a second edition.
19 years later, we are pleased to have produced a third, fully revised and enlarged, version of the book (and it’s got a colourful cover too!) Not only have we included the streets which have been built since the last edition, but the book now also covers Shipley and Smalley, as well as Heanor, Langley Mill, Aldercar, Loscoe, Crosshill, Codnor, Marlpool and Langley.
The names of many streets in the area act as a reminder of our local history, whether by recording old geographic terms, or by commemorating those who have served our communities in the past. It is a shame that so many, though by no means all, of the newer developments have not followed this tradition, and we are instead saddled with names which mean nothing to the community.
Just as the text has been fully revised, likewise, the photographs are, in the main, totally different to those in the last edition – in effect, it is a new book!
The book contains 140 pages, and costs £6.00. It can be purchased locally, as well as at meetings of the Society, or you can order it directly from this site.
