Membership

Joining the Heanor and District Local History Society is not costly – we’re not here to make a profit!

The more members we have, the greater the opportunity to preserve our past and our heritage for future generations, and the more influence we have as a campaigning body.

By joining, you are supporting the society’s efforts to record the past and to share that knowledge with a wider audience.

Our meetings are free for anyone to attend, but members receive a copy of the monthly newsletter, published nine times a year (September to May). Additionally we sometimes offer discounts for members, for example on any organised trips or on the annual calendar.

Membership runs from September each year – members joining later in the year will be given the whole year’s newsletters.

Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday each month, and we normally have between 50 and 100 people in the audience (our record is 180!)

The format is usually for a short address from the chairman, followed by a presentation (normally illustrated) on a local history topic – we are usually finished by 9pm, though occasionally meetings can last a little longer.

Non-members are always welcome, and we do not charge an admission fee. However, we would invite non-members to make a donation, and we also hold a monthly raffle.

There is always a display of old newsletters available, and often displays of other items.

We pride ourselves on having the lowest membership fees of any local history society in the area – our aim is simply to get as many people as possible coming to our meetings and taking an interest in the area’s heritage.

You can join at any meeting of the Society (see the Programme for details).

For those who live away from the area, we offer postal membership, and send you the monthly newsletters, either as they come out, or in two batches a year. Unfortunately, the cost of postal membership is predominantly determined by postal costs.

We also offer our newsletters by email, sent out on the day of the monthly meeting.
