Heanor & District Omnibus Company

In July 2009, the Society published this booklet on the history of an almost forgotten firm:

The Heanor and District Omnibus Company was formed by group of local bus and coach operators in the spring of 1934. They hoped to prosper by working together to provide some local bus services and to transport large numbers of workers to the British Celanese factory at Spondon near Derby.

This publication charts the struggle to survive and to keep the vehicles on the road, a battle which ended after just four years with the sale of the business to Barton Transport, Trent Motor Traction and the Midland General Omnibus Company.

The author, John Bennett, has been researching bus companies throughout his life. He has produced a number of books, and published articles in a variety of local history and transport publications.

This booklet is just 30 pages long, but contains a wealth of information about the company, both in the form of narrative, and in excerpts from newspapers of the time. It is illustrated throughout.

The cost of the booklet is £2.50, and it can be purchased locally, as well as at meetings of the Society. The book can also be ordered directly from this site.
