Follow the Master’: A History of Heanor Grammar School

“Follow the Master: A History of Heanor Grammar School, 1893 – 1976” is the definitive account of the history of a well-known institution in the town.

Written after 2½ years research, by this site’s webmaster, Robert M. Mee, the history was first promised 34 years ago, in the last edition of the school magazine, The Heanorian. The school’s last headmaster, Geoffrey Stone, also took an active part in the writing and checking of the book.

Although it is nearly 50 years since the school closed, it is still well-remembered, and the buildings of 1912, along with subsequent extensions, still stand, though its future is in doubt now that it is being sold by Derby College.

The book itself has over 150 pages, and is illustrated throughout.

Chapters include:

Heanor and Early Education

Heanor Technical School – the Early Years

A New Century

The New School

War and Politics: 1910 – 1919

Stoddard’s Last Years – the 1920s
